For the third consecutive time the two have met in a jamboree, Spring Hill got the better of Dickson County — this time a 24-8 Raider win in two quarters of play on Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in the opening matchup of the First Farmers Maury County Jamboree
Winning or losing, however, was not the main focus for either team. Spring Hill coach Ben Martin said his team will take several moments and keys from the film of the game and turn it into teaching moments.
”You have to be cautious with results in these things because it’s a jamboree. We’re going to teach what we can from this and focus on Franklin Central (Ky.),” he said. “We’ll break down the film, but we were also teaching on the sideline. Hopefully that information will help us in the weeks ahead.”
New Dickson County coach Jeff Tomlinson said the Cougars will do exactly the same thing.
”We preached to them that jamborees are nothing but an extra practice. We’ll take what we can, learn from it and move forward,” he said.
Dickson County got on the board first with a 3rd-and-26 conversion from 51 yards out on a Colbey Lamberth pass to Ian Bonura. Cade Pilkinton added the rushing conversion to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead in the first.
Coming into the scrimmage, Martin said his team was in the middle of a quarterback battle with juniors Chance Harmon and Blaise Martin, the coach’s son. Friday night’s contest did not provide much clarity for a decision, the elder Martin said.
”They both played well, and that’s what makes it tough. We planned out what we wanted to see and when we wanted to see both of them with what personnel. It turned into ‘Let’s score’ and then we did score,” coach Martin said. “But they have a special relationship and that makes it even better. Both of them are pulling for each other.
”Chance made some good plays and Blaise did his thing. That’s good.”
Harmon’s first pass of the game was tipped and intercepted, but he rebounded with an 85-yard strike to Joel Herring to tie the game at 8 in the second quarter.
”We had a busted coverage, and you can’t have mental lapses like that, so we’ll take that and teach from it,” Tomlinson said of his defense. “We’ve got a couple things to work out, but that’s what these games are for.”
The big playmaker for Spring Hill on offense was basketball standout Ricola Alderson, who is in his second year of varsity action. Having a year under his belt has been a big help, Ben Martin said.
The senior, who placed fourth in the state in the Class AA long jump last spring, caught an 8-yard touchdown pass and the subsequent two-point-conversion, and later ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
”Having an extra year for Ricola and some of those other guys is important because it’s not their first varsity experience,” he said. “It’s going to pay off for us.”
Dickson County will host Creek Wood next week, while Spring Hill will play Franklin Central (Ky.) in Bowling Green.
