Pray Maury is preparing to celebrate its seventh anniversary with its upcoming “Prayer on the Square” event in downtown Columbia.

The monthly event is held on the second Saturday each month, and September’s date is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. outside the courthouse.

“Our first ‘Prayer on the Square’ was Sept. 12, 2015 and we’ve been meeting monthly. This is our seventh anniversary,” said Kimberley Burleson, prayer leader for the group.

Pray Maury is a non-denomination, non-partisan group that is welcome to all. Per the group’s website, “Pray Maury embraces the vision and supports the work of the TN Governmental Prayer Alliance (TNGPA). This prayer initiative stands on the shoulders of those who have gone before us over the years carrying a prayer burden for Maury County. We also stand side by side with intercessors already praying for Maury County. We promote and celebrate unity in the Bride of Christ.”

”It’s just people from the community who came together in faith and decided to follow the Lord. He’s given us the ability to continue month after month,” Burleson said.

The event has drawn as many as 70 to 80 people, with Burleson saying, “The people who continue to come are the ones who really believe that prayer makes a difference.”

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic the monthly event continues without interruption. Burleson said attendees stayed in their cars and prayed, with some going to local nursing homes and the hospital to pray from their vehicles.

Pray Maury has also been a part of annual events such as the National Day of Prayer and See You at the Pole. For more information on the group, visit www.praymaury.org or the organization’s Facebook page @PrayMaury.
